The teams at SOCOTEC Italia have been enlisted to provide their expertise during the process of designing and building the new bridge over the Polcevera in Genoa.

A complete offer in Italy

Italferr, the project's lead designer, contracted SOCOTEC's Italian subsidiary to deliver the following assistance and support services during the design stage:

  • Lab-based soil analyses;
  • Piezometric and inclinometric measurements between the different surveys carried out during the viaduct's design studies. This monitoring process started when the bore holes were drilled and is due to last four years;
  • Geotechnical surveys.

In addition, SOCOTEC Italia will be involved in the design phase on behalf of PERGENOVA SCpA(1) to conduct the laboratory tests required to inspect the materials (mainly steel and concrete) and oversee their installation. Such inspections are an integral part of building engineered structures and will be provided by SOCOTEC throughout the project.

About the Genoa bridge

The new bridge has been designed by the world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, whose most well-known works in Paris include the Pompidou Centre and, more recently, the new Palais de Justice. Renzo Piano, who comes from Genoa, has waived his fees to design the new bridge, which will resemble a ship anchored in the valley. Handover is planned before the end of this year.
