Project overview 

The Metro Regional Connector addressed a critical transit bottleneck in Los Angeles for decades. Passengers traveling between North/South and East/West rail lines were forced to transfer stations, adding up to 30 minutes to each journey. 

Building beneath one of the most active urban centers in the United States introduced significant engineering challenges. The project required the construction of twin tunnels extending 1.9 miles, more than 50 feet below grade, along with three new underground stations in the heart of downtown. 

Construction had to proceed without disrupting businesses, residents, utilities, or nearby landmarks. Sensitive structures -including the Walt Disney Concert Hall - required careful protection, while access to key districts such as Little Tokyo had to be maintained throughout the works. 

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) advanced through variable ground conditions, and multiple excavation methods were deployed, including Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) and cut-and-cover construction. The project demanded continuous oversight of ground movement, structural response, and groundwater conditions to safeguard both the infrastructure and the surrounding community.

Services

Geotechnical instrumentation precision monitoring for complex underground works 

Our geotechnical team deployed an integrated monitoring system combining advanced instrumentation with real-time data analysis to ensure safe tunnel advancement. 

Supervised contractor-installed instrumentation, verified compliance with project specifications, and ensured continuous data acquisition and equipment performance.

Deployed 80 multi-point borehole extensometers, 50 settlement points, 20 inclinometers, 5 groundwater wells, and specialized sensors (strain gauges, load cells, tilt meters, crack gauges) to monitor vertical and lateral ground movement, displacement, and subsurface conditions.

Implemented iSiteCentral™, a GIS-based remote monitoring platform, established early warning thresholds, and delivered timely data interpretation and reporting to stakeholders.

Evaluated ground deformation during TBM operations, monitored SEM cavern excavation, assessed cut-and-cover station construction, and reviewed geotechnical submittals providing a comprehensive safety framework that enabled confident advancement beneath downtown Los Angeles.

The geotechnical monitoring program provided LA Metro with actionable, real-time intelligence throughout construction. By tracking ground surface movement and subsurface behavior with precision, the team responded proactively to evolving conditions and maintained control during complex excavation sequences.
