Structural engineering and design of foundation components under challenging conditions for the Heilbronn combined-cycle power plant.
A modern combined-cycle gas and steam power plant with cogeneration is being built at the Heilbronn site — a key component of achieving climate-neutral energy production by 2035.
We were responsible for the structural design of the complex concrete structures, which were built under challenging ground conditions, high groundwater levels, and high static and dynamic loads. In addition, we supported the project with our expertise in BIM methodology, water protection, and waterproof construction — from the preliminary planning phase through to the detailed design phase.

Project Details
The construction of the new combined-cycle gas and steam power plant with cogeneration will replace the existing coal-fired power plant and represents a key step in EnBW’s strategy for climate neutrality. The power plant will be supplemented by a hot-water boiler system and a heat storage facility to ensure a sustainable district heating supply.
While the plant engineering is being carried out by a general contractor, EnBW directly awarded the concrete construction work due to the complex requirements. Difficult ground conditions, high groundwater levels, and high static and dynamic loads placed special demands on the foundations, steel structures, and machine foundations.
We were selected based on our comprehensive expertise in structural and project planning, digital BIM methodology, water protection, and watertight constructions, as well as our many years of experience in power plant construction.
Planning and management for the Heilbronn combined cycle power plant project
As a partner of EnBW, our experts handled the complete planning of the load-bearing concrete structures—from the preliminary design phase through structural analysis to the detailed design. BIM-supported processes enabled us to efficiently coordinate planning workflows and minimize coordination issues.
Particular challenges included precise sizing under dynamic loads, the integration of water-protection solutions, and adapting to difficult ground conditions. Thanks to clear communication, structured documentation, and pragmatic on-site problem-solving, construction progress was able to move forward swiftly.
For our work on this project, we were honored with the “vgbe Quality Award” in the fall of 2025 and took second place.
