The SOCOTEC Group is taking part in ITER, the international project to develop an experimental nuclear fusion reactor, as part of a partnership with Tractebel Engineering, a subsidiary of GDF Suez.
Since the beginning of 2014, SOCOTEC Nucléaire has been providing monitoring and overall supervision at the worksite of this exceptional project. The “Installations and worksites” teams are also at work on checking the cranes.
Financed by the main industrialised countries, the ITER project consists in developing an experimental reactor to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy. This alternative process would enable almost unlimited energy production that would be safe and more respectful of the environment as it would considerably reduce the production of nuclear waste.
The reactor is being built in Saint Paul lès Durance in south-eastern France and will be ready to carry out the first experiments in 2020.
